Here’s a quick and dirty recap of a Facebook status I just read:
Professor to student: Son, you are a Christian, right?
Student: Yes, sir!
Prof: And you believe God is all good, right?
Student: Oh yes, sir!
Prof: My brother died of cancer. He prayed to God, but still died. God can’t be seen, heard, touched, tasted or smelled. And if God is good, he would have healed my brother when he prayed.
Student: *leads professor and class down a argument of logic stating the no student in the class has seen, heard, felt, tasted or smelled the professor’s brain, so therefore, by the professor’s own logic, it must not exist”
The story went back and forth with some logical points and ended with the cute little bow that it’s all about faith. Which, of course, is the basis of every religion.
But, here’s the part that got me: at the end of the story, the very last line said, “By the way, the student was Einstein.”
Jimmy Einstein? Fred Einstein? Einstein’s bagels? Because it darned sure wasn’t Albert Einstein, that much I knew. But, I did a little extra startpage.com research and learned a little more.
Albert Einstein was an agnostic. He was most definitely NOT a Christian. He was born a Jew, but gave up any belief in a personal God as a child. The closest thing Einstein had to a religion was a belief that there is a natural order to the universe. But, most definitely not a Christian.
Now, Christian believers, please, PLEASE do not get up in arms about this post. I’m not a theologian, never claimed to be, and this is not written to dissuade anyone’s beliefs from anything. I wrestle with my belief system, but in recent years, I’ve come to know this for sure: your beliefs are your beliefs. They don’t have to be the same as mine. Mine don’t have to be the same as yours. I have no reason to want to change the belief system of anyone.
However, I do want to correct historical inaccuracies. And this was one of them. If a Christian wants to persuade others to the Christian religion, why would anyone have slipped in a blatant lie that the student was Einstein? Sacraficing the truth for a greater good? That seems pretty contrary to what Jesus would have taught, don’t ya think?
I guess it just goes to prove…you can’t believe everything you read on the internet. Shocker, I know.
